Canada-Ukrain Foundation

Established at the 18th Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC), The Canada-Ukraine Foundation was formed in order to coordinate, develop, organize and deliver assistance projects generated by Canadians and directed to Ukraine.

There will always be a need for an institution to monitor, provide & promote commercial, technical and humanitarian aid; to assess and evaluate projects; to foster cooperation and communication among aid providers; to assist in establishing priorities and developing projects that will maximize impact and cost effectiveness; and to act as a forum that brings together individuals and organizations from the community, private and public sectors, which are interested in providing assistance to Ukraine.

CUF therefore was established as a national charitable foundation that would coordinate with Canadian organizations that have projects in Ukraine, as well as other projects in Canada.

Urgent First Aid Supplies for Ukraine

My name is Jeff Burko and I have been a paramedic for 37 years in British Columbia, Canada.

I recently completed a trip to Ukraine providing emergency medical training and first aid supplies. There is a great need for specific items such as tourniquets, compression bandages, etc.

As I am sure you will agree war is tragic on every level but not having the basic essential medical equipment needed to prevent one’s death or someone else`s is just beyond comprehension. I can tell you first hand that is the current reality in Ukraine.

Appalling as war is there is another war being fought in Ukraine and that is the black market. Not unlike any other war, supplies are very often intercepted by the black market and sold at exorbitant cost to those very people that the supplies were intended for. That I why I wanted to ensure that the supplies were literally hand delivered to those that need it.

I am in a unique position to purchase the first aid supplies at wholesale pricing as I operate a medical training (PEAK Emergency Response Training) company based in Delta BC. If enough funds are raised I would return to Ukraine (I am currently close to the Polish/Ukraine border) and once again ensure that the supplies are delivered directly to those that need them. Any amount would make a difference. The goal is to provide 1000 additional tourniquets and other emergency first aid supplies. The target dollar amount is $25,000.

Thank you in advance for your support.

People in Need

Our team works mainly in Donetsk and Luhansk, both in territory under the control of the Ukrainian government and in territory not currently under government control.

For those most in need, who have often lost everything due to the fighting, we are providing food, water, hygiene items and coal for heating in winter. Our work also focuses on repairing damaged houses or water pipes. We also provide psycho-social support and counselling to those who are afraid of further conflict, of the future or fear for their lives.

In areas where there is no fighting, we help people to get back on their feet and return to a normal life. For example, we provide grants to local people to start small businesses, or the People in Need team works with local farmers to increase their agricultural production.

Support Ukrainian Journalism

We can all agree that freedom of press is a crucial tenet for any sovereign society. Ukrainian journalism, in particular, has been under attack by Russia for about a decade, with Russian operatives planting disinformation intended to destabilize Ukraine much in the way those same actors have been meddling with American politics since 2016. Now that Russian forces have physically invaded the country, many Ukrainian journalists now feel unsafe and are scrambling to escape the country, which could leave a vacuum where valuable journalism once was.

For these reasons, and because Russia is actively stemming the flow of honest journalism about their attacks this week, it is more important now than ever to support reliable Ukrainian journalism.

To do so, consider supporting international organizations like Free Press Unlimited and the International Press Institute, both of which are devoted to protecting journalists and journalism more generally on an international scale. You can also donate directly to Ukrainian publications like the Kyiv Independent and the Ukraine Crisis Media Center.
